Syan Schaap works as a strategic consultant and trainer with a focus on crowd science, public safety and crisis management. He is a specialist in event safety and managing director of the Event Safety Institute.

After his Master in Public Administration, Syan started his professional career in 2002, as a researcher for the research bureau of the Dutch Association of Municipalities in The Hague. Between 2004 and 2011, , Syan worked as a researcher and advisor for the COT Institute for Safety, Security and Crisis Management. He took more focus on event safety management and was co-author of a book on event safety. Amongst other projects, Syan was involved in the evaluation of large scale riots during a beach party in Rotterdam (2009) and advised the local authorities in Amsterdam on managing the enormous crowds that gathered annually during the Queensday (later: Kingsday) celebrations.

In 2011 Syan co-founded KCEV, a consultancy bureau that totally focused on event safety.  In 2012, KCEV was integrated in  a group of companies, the Traffic and Travel Group.

Syan founded the Event Safety institute in July 2014. His aim was to create a totally independent expertise center for event safety and crowd management. He started to work with Frank Wijnveld (CEO of CrowdProfessionals) and a number of other experts. In 2016, ESI and CrowdProfessoionals were integrated into one company, keeping both labels in place. Now, ESI has become a nationally reknown institute that advises and delivers courses and training, with a team of 12 professionals. Its customers are local authorities, the police, emergency services, event professionals and other organisations responsible for crowded places. ESI works closely with prof. Keith Still, and delivers his accredited level 5 course “Introduction to Crowd Science” on his behalf in The Netherlands, Belgium and Australia. ESI is a member of the Global Crowd Management Alliance, an initiative that aims to raise the standard of crowd management practices globally through education, advocacy and motivating individuals and organisations to facilitate positive change in the industry. Net to his projects for ESI, Syan is also a lecturer for the Breda University of Applied Sciences, where he delivers lectures in their Minor program “Crowd Safety”.
