Set to Inspire
Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment may be best known for its flagship Mohegan Sun, the casino resort in Connecticut. But it is the second part of the company’s name, “Entertainment,” that will take center stage in Asia at Inspire Integrated Entertainment Resort, the massive complex that recently broke ground in Incheon, South Korea. Among its features will be a Paramount Pictures-licensed theme park.
In addition to gaming, the $5 billion, 520-acre property will include a climate-controlled indoor water park in a 48,000-square-foot building topped with a hemispherical dome. Mohegan also hopes to offer other attractions, including indoor golf and a location-based virtual reality venue.
Inspire’s first phase, which has a planned 2022 opening, will also include conference, convention, and ballroom space that will exceed 200,000 square feet; a luxury hotel with more than 1,250 rooms; and a 15,000-seat concert and sports arena that is being developed in partnership with Live Nation. An indoor/outdoor shopping, nightlife, and dining space will offer more than 40 restaurants and lounges.
The second phase, slated to open in 2025, will welcome the Paramount-themed park. It will include an adjacent dining, entertainment, and retail village.
The resort hasn’t released many details about the 99-acre theme park, but Mohegan CEO Mario Kontomerkos says the resort will “be unique in the Korean domestic market” by offering “epic themed family entertainment.”
Located about an hour from Seoul, the resort will be near Incheon International Airport, one of Northeast Asia’s major hubs. According to the company, the area is poised for growth.
South Koreans, says Kontomerkos, are “one of the highest consumers in the world of themed entertainment.”
By targeting families with the Paramount-themed park and other attractions, the Mohegan CEO asserts that Inspire will push the “transformation of Incheon into what we believe will be the next major entertainment hub in the industry.”
It may not be the last, however. While Kontomerkos says he is unable to disclose specific details, he does confirm the company has met with potential developers on a conceptual plan to bring a new park to Connecticut. It would “further position Mohegan Sun and its surroundings as a destination resort area, which would attract vacationers and families alike,” Kontomerkos notes.
