IAAPA Latin America Summit 2019 Delivers Vibrant Experiences in Guatemala
Guatemala welcomed almost 100 attractions owners, executives, and leaders from 18 countries to IAAPA Latin America Summit 2019 in April. The three-day event featured keynote presentations, educational sessions, and tours of popular attractions in Guatemala City and Retalhuleu, Guatemala.
The two keynote speakers were Ricardo Castillo Sinibaldi, president of the Institute for the Recreation of Private Enterprise Workers of Guatemala (known by its Spanish acronym, IRTRA), who is also a member of the IAAPA Hall of Fame and recipient of the IAAPA Lifetime Service Award, and Diego Pulido, corporate director and general manager of Banco Industrial. They shared their professional experiences and learnings about leadership, innovation, employee motivation, and the importance of having a strong passion for the industry.
The summit’s four educational sessions each focused on specific topics: food and beverage, guest service, sustainability, and theming. During these sessions, participants learned about industry trends and best practices in the Latin America and Caribbean region. For the first time, IAAPA Latin America Summit provided simultaneous Spanish-to-English translation at all sessions, presentations, and facility tours, which included Mundo Petapa amusement park, La Aurora Zoo, Xocomil water park, Xetulul theme park, and IRTRA’s recently opened park, Xejuyup.
Attendees toured the new park in Retalhuleu—where they experienced its attractions and visited back-of-house areas—as well as the Hostal Aldea de la Selva. Staff at each facility explained operational processes, and the IRTRA team discussed sustainability practices, including water treatment and solid waste separation and processing. At La Aurora Zoo in Guatemala City, participants learned about the zoo’s renewed animal habitats, conservation approaches, and its educational volunteering program.
Following IAAPA Latin America Summit 2019, the Post Tour took participants on a journey through three Guatemalan cities—Quetzaltenango, Atitlán, and Antigua Guatemala—to see historic and cultural attractions.
