IAAPA Asia Pacific Team Members Present a Guest Lecture at Hong Kong Polytechnic University
June Ko, vice president and executive director of IAAPA Asia Pacific, and Chris Lo, IAAPA Asia Pacific director of exhibitions, conferences, and sales, recently spoke at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) in Hung Hom, Kowloon, Hong Kong, to a group of 80 students in a theme park and attractions management course. Invited by one of PolyU’s professors, Ko and Lo presented a guest lecture on “Learn, Graduate, and IAAPA,” which centered on the attractions industry and IAAPA’s history and mission.
The presentation highlighted the variety of attractions, facilities, and manufacturing and supplying companies within the industry, as well as the different departments that make up an attraction, including finance, marketing, operations, merchandising, food and beverage, safety, and security. As the students will soon enter the workforce and become future leaders, Ko and Lo shared examples and statistics that illustrated how professional roles within the attractions industry teach invaluable skills applicable to theme parks, family entertainment centers, museums, zoos, aquariums, water parks, and more in countries around the world.
Lastly, the pair presented ways for students and young professionals to get involved with the association, including the IAAPA Show Ambassador Program offered at IAAPA Expo and IAAPA Expo Asia.
“The students were fascinated by the countless opportunities that await them,” Ko said. “It’s great to share the enthusiasm of our IAAPA team, our role in bringing up future leaders, and how we can learn from them.”
