Sally Dark Rides Makes Two Announcements at IAAPA Expo

The centerpiece attraction at the new 75-acre Lost Island theme park scheduled to open next year in Waterloo, Iowa, will be “Volkanu–Quest for the Golden Idol,” Sally Dark Rides (Booth #2267) revealed at IAAPA Expo 2021. The custom-designed ride, inspired by the god of fire, will be located inside a large volcano at the tropical oasis-themed park.
Passengers will be equipped with “Thermal Blasters” and board “Inferno Transport Vehicles” in search of a sacred statue.
“It was about 15 years in the making,” said John Wood, chairman and CEO of Sally Dark Rides. “This is truly a mixed-media, interactive attraction with animatronics, CGI video, and huge characters.”
“Volkanu” will incorporate trackless, 6-degrees-of-freedom vehicles, a first for Sally, according to Wood. “This is going to be a one-of-a-kind, superlative dark ride,” he added.
The attraction design company also announced, “Treasure Hunt: The Ride,” which is scheduled to open next year, as well. To be located at Cannery Row in Monterey Bay, California, the pirate-themed attraction will be designed, owned, and operated by Sally in partnership with Daniels Wood Land.
The 20-minute attraction will include an elaborate queue and preshow experience that will feature animatronic characters. “Cavern Car” vehicles will be equipped with onboard audio and seat vibration capabilities. “Treasure Hunt” will also feature 6K media and projection mapping. “It will be a feast for the eyes,” said Lauren Wood Weaver, vice president of marketing and business development at Sally Dark Rides.
