Proven Money-Making Ideas to Boost Profits

by James Careless

Proven ideas for making more money: That’s what was on the menu at the “What’s Trending in Water Park Food and Beverage Stands and Retail Shops”
session.

Opening speaker/moderator Robert Cordier, general manager of Big Kahuna’s Water and Adventure Park, cut straight to the chase when it came to money-making ideas. For instance, Big Kahuna’s has 26 full service rental cabanas at their park. “We make a huge amount of money on those things,” Cordier said. “They rent like crazy, because people love the service.”

Other Big Kahuna proven money-makers include:

  • Adding soda fountains to ice cream stands
  • Adding a retail sales location to Big Kahuna’s exit gate (doubling sales)
  • Selling already-prepared food at discount prices at end of day

Wet’n Wild Emerald Pointe boosted gift shop sales by removing exterior walls to make the goods inside more visible, said Tiffany Roberts, the park’s revenue manager. Emerald Pointe also set up a wave pool sales stand that sells waterproof sunscreen and aqua socks; and turns out-of-date souvenirs into cash by selling them at the park exit. The results: Emerald Pointe’s per capita retail sales have gone up from 44 to 56 cents.

The session closed with Steve Cohen, chief executive officer of the Amusements & Attractions Food Purchasing Organization (AAFPO). He urged delegates to use the IAAPA-endorsed AAFPO foodbuying program because AAFPO’s volume buying allows it to negotiate lower prices with food suppliers—at no cost to IAAPA members.
