Nightmare Motel - August 2016

Lichtaart, Belgium

The popularity of Bobbejaanland’s Halloween mazes led the park to build a permanent maze with Del Dracco Entertainment this season. As there is a €5 upcharge for the maze, Del Dracco’s principal, Cintia del Mastro, wanted to create a unique combination, mixing a regular scare maze with an escape-room game.

Guests (in groups of five) check into an abandoned motel where they are greeted by a gruesome hotel receptionist. A video playing in a confined waiting room explains the rules of the game. It gives guests the safe word, “Nightmare,” if they need the emergency exit.

Players must find clues to pass through a series of rooms, using UV flashlights. The first part of the maze follows the escape-room game model, with added scares from live actors and special effects. The rest of the maze is more like a regular, runaway haunt.

Bobbejaanland invested €80,000 in the maze, which accommodates 100-120 people an hour. Guests ages 12 and older can expect to spend at least eight minutes inside.
