Brazil's Beto Carrero World spends 25 years as tourism leader
Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2016, Beto Carrero World in Penha, Brazil, has been recognized by the Integrated System of Parks and Tourist Attractions (Sindepat) for its contributions to the nation's tourism industry. The park, which opened Dec. 28, 1991, has been directly responsible for generating 15,000 jobs over the years and for contributing to the success of local restaurants, visitors centers and hotels. The park welcomes more than 2 million guests each year who come to enjoy 100 rides and a full zoo. Popular with domestic and foreign visitors, Beto Carrero World was named by TripAdvisor as the best amusement park in South America.

Dubai Parks & Resorts holds official inauguration
The Dhs13.2 billion Dubai Parks and Resorts in the United Arab Emirates officially opened in a ceremony presided over by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai and UAE's vice president and prime minister. The destination features three theme parks, a water park, a dining district and a four-star hotel spread across 30.6 million square feet. The three theme parks -- Legoland Dubai, Bollywood Parks and Motiongate -- opened separately over the past three months and house around 100 rides and attractions. Gulf Business online (United Arab Emirates)

DreamWorks finds local partner for DreamPlay theme park in Russia
DreamWorks Animation has partnered with Russian firm Innova for the DreamPlay theme park development in Moscow. Construction is slated to begin next month, with Innova expected to spend $15 million on the project. The park, which will feature rides and attractions based on DreamWorks animated movies, is scheduled to open in early 2018. The Hollywood Reporter

Developer backs out of amusement park project in Georgia
A Lionsgate-themed amusement park on around 700 acres of land in Bartow County, Georgia, has been put "on hold indefinitely," its developers have announced. The Avatron Smart Park project, unveiled early last year, would have featured rides and attractions based on movies such as "The Hunger Games" and "Step Up" and was supposed to break ground early this year.

Shanghai Disney Resort in China brightens up for its first Christmas celebration
Lights and Christmas decorations have gone up at Shanghai Disney Resort in China as the theme park celebrates its first Christmas season. Mickey Mouse and other park characters have also put on special festive outfits, and the space in front of Enchanted Storybook Castle is now occupied by a 20-meter-high Christmas tree, which is lit daily at 5:30 p.m. China Daily (Beijing)

Government auditors clear Village Roadshow theme parks in Australia to reopen
Village Roadshow has received permission to reopen the Movie World, Sea World and Wet 'n' Wild theme parks on Australia's Gold Coast in time for the Christmas season. The three parks were among those in the area subjected to a safety audit by the Queensland government in the wake of the deaths of four guests at Dreamworld in October. "The review of Village Roadshow theme parks ... has been completed with not one guest safety issue recorded," Tourism Minister Kate Jones said.

Report: 39 amusement parks in Bogotá, Colombia, not certified to operate
A report commissioned by government officials in Bogotá, Colombia, has revealed that 39 amusement parks operating in the city have not filed papers to allow the establishments to operate legally and have not been inspected. Out of the 55 parks and attractions operating in Bogotá, only 13 are up-to-date with their paperwork. Three additional facilities are currently engaged in the filing process. The inspection was commissioned after 10 people were injured Nov. 2 when a ride failed at the Mundo Aventura park. The parents of two children who were injured in the accident have filed a lawsuit against the park. Park operators say an investigation to determine the cause of the accident has not been completed. Mundo Aventura is one of the 39 parks in the city that is not certified to operate.

New owner to reopen Canadian water park after renovation
Premier Parks, which acquired the former Wild Water Kingdom in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, last summer, has since invested around $33 million on the property ahead of a planned reopening. The 100-acre facility is now slated to debut in June 2017 as Wet 'n' Wild. Brampton Guardian (Ontario)

Splash pad could be coming to Red Bay, Alabama
Plans for an interactive splash pad in Red Bay, Alabama, could make a major step forward after the city's Parks and Recreation agency files an application for a federal grant provided by the US Department of the Interior. The city hopes to shoulder half the funding for the $359,000 project, with the other half to be provided by the grant.

Event Zona FEC to rise in Tupelo, Mississippi
Construction plans have been unveiled for an Event Zona family entertainment center in Tupelo, Mississippi, slated to open in early 2017. The 36,000-square-foot facility will feature a 20-lane bowling alley, including six private lanes; an arcade; and a bumper car area. Expansion of Lincoln Children's Zoo in Nebraska approved
The Lincoln Children's Zoo in Nebraska will move forward with a $16 million expansion after receiving permission from the city council. The plans include an expansion to the Zoo School, or the Lincoln Public Schools' Science Focus Program, in the form of a new educational facility. Lincoln Journal Star (Neb.) Museum in Bengaluru, India, developing audio tour app
An app that would provide an audio tour of the Government Museum in Bengaluru, India, is in its testing phase. Called Pinakin, the app is designed to provide additional background on a number of the more than 185 exhibits spread across the 151-year-old facility, and will be available in two languages. The Hindu (India)

Museums tapping VR technology to boost their appeal
More museums are offering unique experiences through the use of virtual reality (VR) technology. Wearing VR goggles at the Städel Museum in Frankfurt, Germany, can let visitors see the facility as it was 140 years ago, while at the natural history museum in Berlin, they allow visitors to see a living brachiosaurus from a skeleton on display.
