FANTASYLAND - August 2016

SHANGHAI  DISNEY  RESORT: FANTASYLAND

Anchored by the tallest and largest Disney castle in the world, Fantasyland features classic Disney attractions with new twists for the Chinese market.

Enchanted Storybook Castle

In many ways, Shanghai Disneyland’s Enchanted Storybook Castle symbolizes all this park is trying to accomplish. It is reminiscent of prior Disney castles, but is much larger, tells a broader story, does things no other Disney castle can, and incorporates Chinese flair in its design (note the Chinese flower adorning the castle’s tallest finial).

“We wanted to make a statement here, so we built the tallest and largest Disney castle in the world, right in the heart of Shanghai Disneyland,” says Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger.

The castle is dedicated to all Disney princesses, but Snow White receives top billing; her story is told via a walkthrough, interactive attraction within the castle called “Once Upon A Time” Adventure. Here guests view various scenes inspired by “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” depicted through a mix of physical sets and high-definition media.

The castle also incorporates a second attraction, “Voyage to the Crystal Grotto” (see below for more) and the Royal Banquet Hall restaurant. It also serves as a canvas for the park’s nighttime show, “Ignite the Dream.”

Voyage to the Crystal Grotto

This all-new attraction evokes Disneyland’s “Storybook Land Canal Boats,” as guests board a watercraft similar to those in the “Jungle Cruise” and drift down a waterway decorated with Disney character dioramas. The boat then transitions to a passage directly beneath Enchanted Storybook Castle to the titular Crystal Grotto, where projection mapping and other effects make the caverns come to life.

Alice in Wonderland Maze

Tim Burton’s signature vision of this classic tale is embodied in this sizable garden maze under the shadow of Enchanted Storybook Castle. The maze features several photo opportunities and interactive elements, such as a chance to try on one of the Mad Hatter’s hats. The Cheshire Cat also makes a memorable appearance as a digital projection within a darkened cave section.

Other Attractions

•  “Seven Dwarfs Mine Train” is transported from Orlando’s Magic Kingdom to Shanghai, complete with its swinging-bucket ride vehicles and animatronic dwarfs.

•  “Peter Pan’s Flight” adds digital projections to several of this classic dark ride’s scenes, giving the experience a more active feel.

•  Winnie the Pooh receives his own mini-land within Fantasyland, including an adapted version of Orlando’s “The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh,” as well as “Hunny Pot Spin,” Pooh-themed teacups (at right).

Disney Firsts

Enchanted Storybook Castle is the first Disney castle not dedicated to a single princess.

“Voyage to the Crystal Grotto” is the first attraction to interact directly with a Disney castle.

The new ride vehicles on “Peter Pan’s Flight” at Shanghai Disneyland allow for variable speeds and closer proximity to the attraction’s sets.

The “Alice in Wonderland Maze” marks the first time filmmaker Tim Burton’s take on the classic tale is incorporated into a Disney attraction.

“Seven Dwarfs Mine Train” features the “Heigh-Ho” song translated into Mandarin.
