Chair Letter

’Tis the season

Over the past several years, attractions have grown their shoulder seasons to bring in more revenue and attract fresh audiences. Today the holidays are a concrete part of many facilities’ business models.

Halloween and Christmas, in particular, can bring in major attendance and related per cap revenue through haunted houses, winter festivals, specials for Christmas Day, and other events.

In our industry, though, these things don’t just magically appear when the weather starts turning colder. Now is the time we have to start preparing for the end of the year, and this special Holiday Issue includes a slate of stories that identify trends, best practices, and new ideas for attractions wanting to bring more spook or Yuletide cheer to their 2011 programs.

Inside these pages, experts and operators sound off on a wide range of issues and questions. The section leads off with an examination of a new upsell experience for haunted houses—sending guests in one at a time! Elsewhere, look for stories on the use of ice sculptures, running coasters in cold weather, bringing in Santa to FECs, as well as big-picture looks at Halloween trends in Asia and Europe and events in the United States tied to Thanksgiving.

We hope this issue inspires you to add a twist to your existing events or helps you get started with something new at your facility.

I would also like to officially welcome Chip Cleary to his new role as president and CEO of IAAPA. We’re lucky to have such a seasoned veteran and committed industry professional lead the association. We look forward to learning what he has in store for the IAAPA and the industry!

Sincerely,

Bob Rippy, Chairman of the Board
