‘Green’ food for thought
What’s in a trend? Some are fleeting and mercifully go away quickly, while others become permanent fixtures of our culture.
Which of these is “going green”?
You could argue it’s just a trend: one big bandwagon that everyone’s jumping on. But indicators in our industry, at least, demonstrate this movement is here to stay.
FUNWORLD and IAAPA have been discussing this topic at conferences and through articles for several years, and these practices have officially taken root throughout the industry. Whether it’s as simple as e-mail signatures that ask you to consider the environment before printing, or as complicated as building a “green” facility from scratch, there’s no doubt today’s industry member has to be aware of environmental practices more than ever.
In an industry as diverse as ours, however, “green” means different things to different people. The “green” activities that make sense to a waterpark might be completely different from those that are meaningful to an FEC or museum.
And what practices make a difference to the guest experience? What initiatives help save money and energy during difficult financial times? What are IAAPA members already doing along these lines, and what opportunities should they be watching for in the future? These are the questions FUNWORLD asked as part of its first “green” issue, and our industry had a lot to say.
Nearly all of the pages in this issue are dedicated to deciphering what “going green” means to us. I hope it’s equal parts affirmation and inspiration as you wrestle with this topic in your own businesses. If you have ideas and comments to share about this issue, let us know by sending an e-mail (what else?) to FUNWORLD@IAAPA.org.
Sincerely,

Bob Rippy, Chairman of the Board
