This month’s Funworld focuses on the environmental and legislative topics that currently affect our industry. Your association has been at the forefront of many issues, protecting your rights and providing the industry with a strong voice in the legislative process. Many important achievements have been accomplished on your behalf.
Over the past two years, IAAPA has worked to convince the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) that its ride accident
data was faulty and misrepresented our industry’s excellent safety record. As a result
of this effort, IAAPA is currently working closely with the CPSC to develop a better, more accurate system of data collection and reporting. To this end, IAAPA created and implemented reporting standards for our member companies. IAAPA solicited the support of the National Safety Council (NSC) to publish this report. The NSC is an excellent partner in this initiative, lending an extra measure of credibility to our industry.
This is a huge step in the right direction that will go far to communicate the safe environment we provide to our guests.
IAAPA has created and is steadily building a new Political Action Committee (PAC), which will help support our public policy goals to make sure our voice is heard in the legislative arena. IAAPA PAC gives us an effective vehicle to counter onerous legislative initiatives like those proposed by Congressman Markey.
IAAPA is also carefully monitoring bio-terrorism rulings emanating from the Office of Homeland Security so our industry isn’t blindsided with decisions that could adversely affect our business. IAAPA has been working closely with the State Department and the Justice Department to ensure that international visitors and our all-important seasonal workforce can continue to travel with relative ease across national borders. IAAPA is also working with other governmental entities on travel and tourism issues that affect our industry globally.
We are fortunate IAAPA is acting as a global watchdog for our industry. As you read this issue, you will learn more about how IAAPA is serving our membership. It is a great example of how we, as an industry, can step up to the plate and work with government entities on a variety of initiatives that benefit all.

Best Wishes,

Gary Story
