Waiting for you at IAAPA Orlando is a wonderful program that will showcase what works and whats new for waterpark operators and suppliers. The bounty of it all might prove to be a bit overwhelming, especially for those fairly new to the event. So here are some suggestions on making the most of all that awaits you at the greatest show on earth.
Make a Plan
Before setting out for the convention center, be sure to read the attendee brochure, and select the seminars and events you want to attend. Keeping your objectives in mind, work out your schedule and take advantage of every possible learning opportunity that might be of interest to you. If you have a specific reason for attending IAAPA Orlando 2003, dont allow yourself to be sidetracked.
If your objectives will be better accomplished at the trade show, make sure to work seminars and events into your schedule, as well. If you are with a group, consider splitting up to cover more and reporting back to one another later.
The IAAPA Waterpark Committee has put together a program of educational sessions specifically for waterpark members. To make the most of these presentations, plan to arrive early. Get a good seat and get comfortable with your surroundings. By the time the program begins, you will feel settled and have no need to focus on anything but the speaker and the information being offered. Take part in the discussions whenever appropriate, and if you have questions, be sure to ask them.
The trade show floor is enormous, and with all its sights and sounds, it will help to arrive with a list of companies you want to visit and their booth numbers. Check them off after visiting, and enjoy the unexpected and unfamiliar on your way to your next stop. And dont forget to wear comfortable shoes.
When making your plan, dont overlook events such as the Whats New Theater, not to mention the many award presentations. Its interesting to see what other facilities are doing in the various competitions. Even if your park did not enter this year, you may be inspired to do so next year, and you will be familiar with the territory.
Take Notes
Theres so much to keep fresh in your mind at the IAAPA Trade Show and Convention, you may find it serves you well to take notes. Note taking at the educational workshops and seminars is a great way to remember key points for future use, or to share with colleagues at home. During the course of the workshops, you will likely come up with ideas of your own about implementing the information at your own facility. Dont let them get away. Create your own action list within your program notes.
While cruising the enormous trade show floor, you will have plenty of opportunities to get printed material and business cards. Anytime you get a business card from a contact you want to keep, write information about the person and how you met him or her on the back of the card. Getting into this habit will help you remember that person in the future. Even if they are not important to you now, dont immediately toss out the cards you dont need. File them awaythey might be valuable later. And be sure to bring plenty of your own cards to hand out at seminars, receptions, and social events.
Make New Friends
Networking is one of the most important and enjoyable activities at the IAAPA Convention and Trade Show. Plan to attend the receptions and special eventsparticularly the Waterpark Social. This is a prime opportunity to meet people who share your objectives, interests, and challenges. In fact, lifelong friendships and business relationships have started at the socials, workshops, seminars, trade show, events in the Waterpark Lounge, and even in the line for the shuttle bus. Be open to introducing yourself to those around you at every possible opportunity.
The Waterpark Lounge is a multipurpose room where several waterpark sessions take place. When no events are scheduled, waterpark members are invited to use the area as their own casual meeting place, or simply as a spot to take a break and rest their feet. You will usually find a Waterpark Committee member with whom you can share ideas, and complimentary soft drinks.
Broaden Your Horizons
In addition to learning about the latest waterpark technology and products, you will also discover a vast array of services and programs that enhance every area of guest experiences and park operations. You never know where your next great idea will come from, but nowhere is there more opportunity for it than at the IAAPA Convention and Trade Show. So make the most of it and return home ready to rock your own waterpark world!
