WANTED: What’s New in the Industry

IAAPA is currently developing the annual What’s New Theater multimedia spectacular, which will kick off the IAAPA Orlando 2003 Convention and Trade Show on Wednesday, November 19.

The What’s New Theater will showcase video segments of innovations in our industry during the past year from around the world. This includes new parks, attractions, and all types of rides that are exciting and innovative.

This year, we will be featuring the “faces of the industry” as part of the multimedia presentation. The concept is to have the president, general manager, or spokesperson for a facility introduce the new attraction on tape. Video of guests who were interviewed as they exited the attraction is also included. After all, we are an industry of people, not just hardware. As in the past, the various attractions may be featured for up to 30 seconds, but if you want to be considered, send at least 90 seconds of footage to the film producers and editors.

IAAPA will be providing an exciting multi-screen
production that will also include still shots. For that purpose, also include photographs showing people’s faces to give editors a variety of choices.
For videos, we would prefer NTSC only (DVCAM, MiniDv, or BetaSP) and no VHS submissions. All videos and photos must be clearly labeled with category, name of the attraction, the location, and opening date.

Other preferred technical video requirements are:
• 10-second black, stripe, bars, or tone
• Audio—60 seconds of ambient noise,
unbalanced XLR, or RCA lavalieres
• Lighting—White balancing
• Lighting—Daytime Outdoor (diffusers if possible,
i.e., handheld frame diffuser)
• Lighting—Nighttime Outdoor (standard T-shaped
lighting: rim light, fill light, and key light)
• A minimum of one minute and 30 seconds
of tape footage
• Include multiple shots from different angles
• Include patrons visiting, using, or riding the attraction
• Include off-camera narration detailing the purpose, benefits, and technical information
relating to the attraction

Please contact David Lee at IAAPA with questions, or to receive a copy of the complete technical standards required for video submissions, e-mail: dlee@iaapa.org or call 703/836-4800 extension 749.

First Swiss Theme Park Now Open

On May 24, Mystery Park in Interlaken, Switzerland finally opened. Half a million visitors a year are expected—a realistic figure considering the many attractions in the region as well as the reputation of Erich von Däniken, the initiator of this theme park.

Von Däniken’s books on myths and mysteries have sold more than 62 million copies, and his knowledge makes it possible to illustrate unexplainable but real mysteries through high-tech multimedia. Covering an area of more than 300,000 square feet, Mystery Park includes seven themed buildings placed in a giant ring, where the park presents the greatest mysteries from humankind’s ancient culture. A glass corridor links all of the pavilions with the center building, a 135-foot-high tower designed in the shape of a giant ball.

In a 12-minute laser multimedia show at the MegaStones pavilion, visitors can learn about the seven different theories on the creation of ancient stone buildings such as Stonehenge. The main attraction at MegaStones is a laser show of an exact replica of Stonehenge projected onto a waterfall. Kraftwerk, from Wels, Austria, developed MegaStones.

The overall presentation includes six side-attraction shows that give explanations of ancient stone works. Kraftwerk, the only non-Swiss contractor, oversaw the entire MegaStones project, demonstrating that technical knowledge and creativity can still be perfectly combined.

“Mystery Park AG is a company registered on the stock market whose shareholders include institutions and companies as well as individuals. Mystery Park shows that also theme parks can be financed by founding a stock corporation,” says Kraftwerk Managing Director Markus Beyr.

Kraftwerk is already working on its next attraction project, which will be a complete technical solution for the Loisium, a wine adventure world in Langenlois, Lower Austria. This wine attraction was designed by the American architect Steven Holl and the Swiss artist Otto Steiner and will open in September 2003.

MBE Awarded to Creator of Crealy Park

Angela Wright, managing director and creator of Crealy Adventure Park, was presented with the Member of the Order of the British Empire medal by Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace on Thursday, June 12.

Wright says, “I was greatly honored to accept the MBE on behalf of Crealy, which is a tribute to all staff and regular guests of our park in beautiful East Devon. We are a family-run business for other families, so my husband David and his parents, Roy and Marion Down, were also guests at Buckingham Palace—an experience we will never forget.”

Wright was awarded an MBE for her services to the tourism industry. Crealy Adventure Park has received many awards, including the Business Challenge South West 2002. Wright was one of four national winners of the “Parents at Work” Best Boss Awards in 2001.
