The Indianapolis Zoo, rated by Trip Advisor as one of the top ten zoos in the country, is located in the heart of exciting downtown Indianapolis, and services 1.1 million guest annually.
An experienced professional is needed to lead and manage our Guest Services Department. The Director of Guest Services is responsible for the overall operation of Admissions, Rides Operations, and Park Operations (which includes Housekeeping & Support Services). Experience with the Gateway point of sale system is strongly preferred.
The successful candidate must be a high-energy leader, capable of juggling multiple priorities while working a non-traditional work week. This job demands 24/7 on-call availability. Weekend work, holidays and overtime are required. Flexibility in scheduled hours is a must. Must also possess a valid Indiana driver’s license, and be insurable by the Zoo’s insurance carrier.
Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in a related field (Hospitality, Retail Management, Business Administration) is required.
A minimum of seven (7) years of professional work experience in a related field (zoo, hospitality industry, guest service, management) is required. Strongly prefer at least five (5) years of supervisory experience.
Specific duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Oversee safety compliance throughout the Department.
- Manage and direct the employees of all Guest Services departments.
- Partner with Vice President of Operations to establish guest recovery standards and programs.
- Leads the Department’s efforts in ensuring a positive guest experience for all events.
- Prepares, manages and monitors annual business plan and budget; ensure costs/revenue are meeting targeted goals.
- Communicate in a professional, productive, effective manner with other employees, vendors, and guests. Must be able to verbally converse and listen with comprehension.
- Possess demonstrated leadership ability to motivate, lead and inspire the team
- Proven conflict resolution and performance coaching skills.
- Visual acuity required.
- Computer and typing abilities preferred.
- Develop and implement staff training
The physical demands of this position include:
- Walking the 64 acre campus repeatedly throughout the day in all kinds of weather conditions. Also long periods of standing may be required.
- Will be physically required to lift medium work, which includes exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
