Dr. Kathryn Woodcock

Meet an #IAE16 Attendee

Name: Dr. Kathryn Woodcock
Title: Associate Professor and Director of Ryerson University THRILL Lab
Company: Ryerson University
IAAPA Member since: 2010
Twitter handle: @THRILL_Lab

Tell me a little about your attraction:
Ryerson University is one of the largest universities in Canada, and offers more than 100 undergraduate and graduate degree programs to more than 38,000 students in downtown Toronto. The THRILL Lab was established in 2002 with Canadian federal science and engineering research funding to explore applications of human factors engineering to amusement attractions. The potential spans from safety inspection and operator control interface design to patron interaction with attractions. We now work with operators, manufacturers, consultants, and regulators in a variety of different ways. The lab also works with the Ryerson Thrill Club to mentor students with professional interest in the industry, and we are currently developing some related graduate courses.

What is bringing you to IAAPA Attractions Expo in 2016?
Over the years, I have become progressively more involved in IAAPA, and now serve on the IAAPA Global Safety Committee, and also lead a task group within ASTM International Committee F24 examining approaches to rider eligibility assessment to increase access to people with disabilities. The Expo exhibits and networking events provide superb opportunities to meet new people and catch up with everyone.

What's a memorable experience that you've had at IAAPA Attractions Expo? I always advise colleagues and students to attend the Kickoff Event because one hour gives a concise and brilliantly produced overview of the state of the industry. However, IAAPA Celebrates also provides great opportunities for interaction combined with access to the newest attractions produced by people who know how to entertain. I always enjoy experiencing an attraction with the people who created it! I love to see whether I have caught all the layers of the design intent, and all the tricks.

Why do you think it’s important for someone in the industry to attend? The academic world tends to rely on peer-reviewed journals to disseminate and learn about the state of the art. Academics who do not attend IAAPA may have no idea what innovation the industry has already implemented. If we want to contribute innovations that are relevant to the industry, and guide students to innovate in useful ways, we need to hear the industry tell its story its own way. The entire industry is about experience, so experiencing IAAPA Attractions Expo is the naturally optimal medium to learn what is new, what’s working, and what opportunities are on the horizon.

Share a favorite experience as a guest/employee at an attraction: That moment when students realize attractions are not just for vacation, but the industry offers numerous types of professional opportunities in an exciting atmosphere! I love seeing former students working in the industry!

Be sure to follow Kathryn online and say hello when you see her in Orlando!

Title: Senior Amusement Park Manager
Company: Luna Park Sydney, Australia
IAAPA Member since: 2010
Twitter handle: @lunaparksydney

Tell me a little about your attraction.
Luna Park has been an iconic attraction in Sydney, Australia since 1935. Luna Park, which was inspired by the original in New York, has been fully refurbished and restored, so it has a very unique atmosphere and charm with its art-deco-inspired fantasy architecture. Alongside the original rides and attractions, we have functions and events facilities that accommodate about 750 events each year.

What is bringing you to IAAPA Attractions Expo in 2016?
It's another opportunity to be inspired, to learn, grow, and bring back some new ideas to try! I'm also looking forward to seeing what the latest new additions are on the show floor.

What's a memorable experience that you've had at IAAPA Attractions Expo?
There have been many! I think being recognized as an IAAPA Brass Ring Award winner is up there as one of my most memorable experiences.

Why do you think it's important for someone in the industry to attend?
IAAPA Attractions Expo is the place to find out what's happening in the industry. It allows operators like me to stay informed on industry best practices in regards to safety, operations, service, and human resources, to name a few. It's also a great opportunity to network and connect with others who operate similar facilities, rides, and attractions as we do.

Share a favorite experience as a guest/employee at an attraction.
The thing I love most about working in this industry is being able to watch guests' reactions to the things we have created for their enjoyment. I love to watch them as they get caught up in the excitement of the experience visiting our attractions and how they interact with and respond to the spaces and places we have created for them.

Brad is part of IAAPA's Games and Merchandising subcommittee and has been instrumental in coordinating the education programs at IAAPA Attractions Expo 2016 championed by that group. He will moderate "Midway Games: Lessons in Creating an Environment" on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 3:30-4:45 p.m.

Be sure to follow Brad online and say hello when you see him in Orlando!

Tell me a little about your attraction. We are displaying the world's only cart-less roller coaster, the Cloud Coaster. This is a family-friendly attraction where guests can experience the triple sensation of zip-lining, flying, and rocketing down a roller coaster. We won best booth design last year, our ninth industry award, and this year it will be even more amazing! We are coming as a 1930's airplane hangar. It is going to look super cool!

What is bringing you to IAAPA Attractions Expo in 2016?
The opportunities, the networking, the customers, and the industry friends. You can't find all of this in one place. IAAPA is the connector that makes it all possible. No industry in the world offers so much opportunity packed into one trade show.

What's a memorable experience that you've had at IAAPA Attractions Expo? The IAAPA Celebrates party in 2014. We had the pleasure to hang with John McReynolds at the new Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Florida. He was a blast to be with and the VIP treatment was off the charts. We had no wait times on world-class attractions, great food, and fantastic drinks! It was a fun time to catch up with industry friends.

Why do you think it's important for someone in the industry to attend? If you play any part in the amusement industry it is imperative that you become a member and also attend.  The education, the networking, the innovation, collaboration, and the co-creation of ideas only happens through IAAPA. If you are in the fun business you need to share that fun at IAAPA. You need to get involved and make sure you join the association. It was the best decision of my career to be an IAAPA member.

Share a favorite experience as a guest/employee at an attraction. I would have to say this year at Disneyland. My wife and I got to take our 3-year-old son Ethan for the first time. Seeing the excitement in his eyes as we entered the main entry gate was magical. I will never forget it. It was four days packed with laughter and fun! I've been to Disneyland countless times and Ethan made it the best experience ever! Kids are what make parks a happy place.

Be sure to follow Phil online @ExtremeEngineer and stop by the Extreme Engineering Cloud Coaster booth (3265) on the show floor.

Tell me a little about your company.
We specialize in classic and interactive dark ride experiences as well as animatronic characters. This year we will have new dark ride products on display, including our concept based on AMC’s hit TV series The Walking Dead. And, for the first time ever, we will be debuting a thrilling new interactive dark ride concept based on the massively popular Five Nights At Freddy’s video game – something I’m very excited about.  For fun, we’ll also bring back some familiar faces; The Joker from Six Flags’ JUSTICE LEAGUE dark rides will be blasting people with laughing gas and our “Walker” will growl at attendees. We pull out all the stops for IAAPA!

What is bringing you to IAAPA Attractions Expo in 2016? Everything. IAAPA is like a holiday of it’s own.  You think about it all year, you countdown the days until it begins, and then it’s here before you know it.  To coin a term from my father, the first day of the show feels like Christmas morning.  It’s exhilarating, exhausting in the best way, and FUN!

What's a memorable experience that you've had at IAAPA Attractions Expo? Two years ago we had a press conference the first day of the show to announce details of our upcoming Six Flags attraction. We had a pretty large crowd and it was great to see all those wide eyes in the aisles. When we pulled the cover off our Joker animatronic and he blasted the crowd with laughing gas for the first time… well, it was a moment I’ll never forget.

Why do you think it’s important for someone in the industry to attend? As an exhibitor, your product is being seen by the best of the best all in under a week’s time. It’s here where you have the greatest opportunity to educate people about who you are, what you do and what you offer. Additionally, as a professional working in the amusement industry, there’s no better place to network and meet new friends. I met some of my very best friends in the world at past IAAPA shows.

Share a favorite experience as a guest/employee at an attraction. When you get the opportunity to experience some of the greatest theme parks and attractions in the world, it’s already something special, but when you can do it with hundreds of other theme park nerds like yourself, it’s incredible. I was lucky enough to go to the opening of Disney Shanghai with members of this wonderful IAAPA group and trust me, did we make memories!

Be sure to follow Sally Corporation online @SallyCorp and stop by their booth (2254) on the show floor.

Tell me a little about your company.
Triotech is an award winning creator of interactive media-based attractions. What's special about us is that we have our own in-house animation studio so this allows us to deliver turn-key integrated attractions. It's one of the reasons we now have over 225 dark rides and interactive theatres spread out in 50 countries across the world!

What is bringing you to IAAPA Attractions Expo 2016?
This year we are launching a brand new flying simulator. As usual for Triotech, attendees will be able to experience it first-hand in the Triotech Lab which is set up right in our booth. This is the point of the Triotech Lab: bringing new technology to the show floor...every year! Last year we did it with Maestro Hand Gesture Technology, a Triotech exclusive that is featured in NINJAGO The Ride. This year we have a completely different experience.

We will also have a special announcement about a new ride featuring a really cool I.P. during our press conference which is scheduled on the first day of the show.

Oh! And we have a brand new movie which guests will be able to try in our interactive theater! Let's just say it will be a busy week!

What's a memorable experience that you've had at IAAPA Attractions Expo?
Without question it is winning an Impact Award for our interactive dark ride Wonder Mountain's Guardian at Canada's Wonderland. To win a IAAPA Brass Ring Award for Best New Product is already an amazing feat when you operate in such a creative industry as ours, but to win the Impact Award on top of that was really special.

Why do you think it's important for someone in the industry to attend?
IAAPA's Attractions Expo is the be all and end all for our industry. With operators large and small, vendors of products and services,  design firms, the TEA folks, etc etc. How can you not be there? It is a must regardless of which segment your organization operates in.

Share a favorite experience as a guest/employee at an attraction.
I was shooting a promotional video set at 7D Experience, a Triotech interactive theater set on Pier 39 in San Francisco and we had real guests in the ride. This one lady was screaming her lungs out throughout the entire experience. It was my first video shoot at this location and it hit me: we're really onto something if we can create so much emotion!

Be sure to follow Triotech onlne @Triotech1 and stop by booth 3254!

Tell me a little about your yourself.
I have been in the attractions industry for over 30 years, having the good fortune to live, learn and work all over the world.

What is bringing you to IAAPA Attractions Expo 2016?
Over the years I have become more and more involved with IAAPA on multiple levels, presently serving on both the Education Committee and chairing the Games & Retail Subcommittee, in addition to several taskforces. The opportunity to see and meet with the different people face-to-face after working together via conference calls and emails is really exciting and it goes beyond networking. What I take away year-after-year is a sense of community, of knowing that there are others who have "been there, done that," or want to bounce around new ideas. Staying connected, being invigorated, learning new and refreshing information in education seminars, and coming away newly inspired are just a few of the reasons that I look forward to attending Expo.

What's a memorable experience that you've had at IAAPA Attractions Expo?
In 2011, I had the privilege of seeing the two industry pioneers whom I had nominated, Betty Taylor and Wally Boag, admitted to the IAAPA Hall of Fame. Their amazing abilities to connect and entertain Disneyland audiences at the Golden Horseshoe Saloon, each performance as fresh and vibrant as the last, was an inspiration to me as I was just starting out. It meant so much to see these two brilliant entertainers, who influenced so many, receive such a deserved accolade.

Why do you think it's important for someone in the industry to attend?
For the diversity of experiences; whether Educational Sessions, Trade-Show Floor, Tours, or networking, it is an annual event not to be missed.  For example, the IAAPA Brass Ring Awards is a must for anyone interested in the innovative thinking that is focused on delivering an impactful guest experience. From marketing to food and beverage, human resources to retail, the entries represent the best-of-the-best from around the world in ways running the gamut from bringing guests in the gate to delivering tangible memories that will last for years to come.  It's a great way to see what is actively happening in the industry and come away greatly inspired and filled with ideas.

Share a favorite experience as a guest/employee at an attraction.
There are so many from which to choose, but perhaps my favorite was the opening of "The Spirit of Ramoji," at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad, India.  From where we started to where we grew with this production still ranks as one of my best experiences because of the great achievement we all shared as a team with such overwhelmingly spectacular results. For that experience, I will always be grateful.

Be sure to follow Adrea online @adreagibbs and attend her session on Wednesday, Nov. 16: 9-10:15 a.m., Merchandise: One Good Display.
