Project Planning for the Attractions Industry


Imagine the Ideas ...
Imagine the ideas you will generate as you explore project management and innovation in the attractions industry. Innovation is now recognized as the single most important ingredient in any modern economy. The art of managing attractions projects from ideas through implementation requires that all team members be fully engaged in renewal. This workshop will offer insights and tools for service leaders responsible for managing all types of projects in the attractions industry. 
The highly interactive workshop will engage attendees in simulation-based learning and team-oriented idea generation during the live workshop as well as continued application of the material through access to an online toolkit for project implementation and review.

Program Outline 


The Renewal Process Framework
The framework for understanding project management in the memories business includes a) context  b) initiation  c) teaming  d) implementation  e) communication  f) review  g) integration.  Attendees will engage in individual and group activities to understand and practice each phase of the framework and apply it to their own workplace.  
San Diego Attraction Case Studies
The seven phases of the renewal process framework in action will be illustrated using real world examples of projects from small and large attractions in San Diego, a community considered a “laboratory” for learning about the hospitality marketplace. Case studies will be drawn from a museum, tour operator, botanical garden, water park, event company, theme park and more.  
Idea Implementation Toolkit for the Memories Business
Participants will actively engage in learning about and practicing each of the phases of the project management framework during the full-day workshop.  In addition, participants will have the opportunity to continue their application of the material through access to an online toolkit.  This free take-away is a collection of templates, charts, documents, and other performance tools customized for the memories business. 


Faculty 

Lori Sipe and Mark Testa, are faculty members from the hospitality and tourism management program at San Diego State University.  Lori and Mark have more than 30 years of combined management experience in the theme park, cruise ship, and dining industry segments.
