‘Boss, I Don’t Feel So Good’

by Susan Johnston Taylor

In the United States, this past winter was one of the worst flu seasons in a decade, with 50 out of 54 jurisdictions reporting regional or widespread activity in mid-February, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website. Nearly 80 percent of employees still go to work when they’re sick, finds a 2016 cold and flu survey from Staples Business Advantage.

When employees show up to work sick, they potentially spread germs to other workers or customers, and it’s especially dicey if they’re preparing or serving food. At the same time, though, many seasonal or part-time workers at attractions don’t get paid sick leave unless they live in a city or state where it’s required. And when an employee calls in sick, supervisors need to fill a last-minute hole in the schedule.

As seasonal parks operate through the summer, staffing remains a concern this year, and keeping workers on the job is always easier when they are not ill. While flu symptoms aren’t as typical in the summer, colds, stomach bugs, and other illnesses can still sideline employees and leave staffing gaps.

Funworld spoke with three experts to find out how they handle issues around sick leave.

BARBARA FLYNN

The Expert: Barbara Flynn, President, People First (Florida-based HR consulting company)

Flynn encourages managers to make it as easy as possible for employees to notify them when they’re sick. In some cases, that means providing employees with a cellphone number they can text when they’re sick so the manager can plan accordingly. “It’s always important to have people cross-trained, so then someone else can be a backup to that person who’s called in sick,” she adds.

How do you determine the backup person? “From an economist’s standpoint, it should be someone who’s not going to be working overtime [to cover that shift],” Flynn says. “After taking into consideration … who has the most experience that could come and do the job with little or no oversight or management?”

Unless the attraction is located in a state that requires employers to provide paid time off (PTO), it’s not standard in this industry. Still, Flynn says providing it could serve as a competitive advantage for recruiting purposes. “Compensation isn’t always the No. 1 factor in working for an organization,” she says. “How [employees are] managed and how they’re treated is important. If they know they can take some time off and get compensated for it, they might consider working there as opposed to somewhere else.”

For clients in this industry who aren’t required to provide PTO but want to offer this perk, Flynn suggests averaging employees’ number of hours worked per week over their first year of employment. “That’s how much PTO they get for the second year,” she says.

DENISE BECKSON

The Expert: Denise Beckson, director of operations and human resources, Morey’s Piers, Beachfront Waterparks and Resorts in Wildwood, New Jersey

Morey’s Piers’ season runs Memorial Day to Labor Day with weekend hours during the shoulder season. The attraction opened in the 1960s, so management has a strong grasp on forecasting staffing needs for any given day. “We basically overschedule a little bit,” Beckson explains. “If we have too many folks, we ask people if they’d like to go home.” Most of Morey’s employees are teens and college students, so they often don’t mind flexible scheduling from week to week and the ability to enjoy an unexpected afternoon off.

New Jersey does not have a statewide regulation on paid sick leave. Morey’s full-time staff gets PTO, but seasonal or part-time employees do not. “We’ve had folks who maybe missed a couple of days because they weren’t feeling well, and they would switch [shifts] with someone else,” Beckson says. “We’re almost always able to accommodate that.”

Several nearby cities including Newark, Trenton, and Jersey City do have laws on paid sick leave, so Beckson is monitoring local legislation around this issue. She encourages other human resources and operations professionals to stay on top of new legislation and how it might impact their businesses. “It’s something from an advocacy standpoint to be aware of, comment on, and provide feedback to regulators,” she says.

SABRA REYES

The Expert: Sabra Reyes, director of human resources, Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk in Santa Cruz, California

Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk’s season used to run Memorial Day to Labor Day, but now it’s open for the shoulder season, as well as some winter festivities including an ice skating rink. “We are becoming much more of a year-round operation,” Reyes says.

That means some of its employees may contract the flu and need to call in sick. “If somebody is sick, we definitely don’t want them coming to work,” Reyes says. As of July 1, 2015, California employees who work in the state for 30 or more days for the same employer in a 12-month period must accrue at least one hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked.

Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk provides paid sick leave in accordance with California state law. To cover the occasional sick day, Reyes says individual departments sometimes schedule a little extra in anticipation that someone might call in sick. “We also schedule in cutbacks,” she says. “So, if somebody comes in for an eight-hour shift, we’ll decide if we want to cut back those hours at the four-hour mark. It’s a constant scheduling juggle.”

Scheduling challenges aside, Reyes stresses the importance of giving employees the time they need to rest up and get well. “We don’t want people coming to work sick,” Reyes says. “I don’t think it proves for a very great experience for the employee or for our guests. We hope that our employees are well and fully engaged and happy to be interacting with guests.”
