Thomas Town section coming to Kennywood in Pennsylvania
Kennywood in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, announced that its Olde Kennywood Railroad area will be revamped into a new $8.5 million section themed around the "Thomas the Tank Engine" children's series. Thomas Town at Kennywood, slated to open by June, will feature a Thomas-themed train experience plus four new attractions: "The Convoy," "Cranky's Drop Tower," "Firefighting Flynn" and "Harold's Helicopters." KDKA-TV (Pittsburgh) (2/6) 

Some rides announced for Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi
Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi on Yas Island released details on two of its six zones, Metropolis and Cartoon Junction, ahead of its scheduled summer debut. The Metropolis section will feature "Superman 360: Battle for Metropolis" and the "Green Lantern: Galactic Odyssey" 4-D flying theater, among others, while Cartoon Junction will include rides and attractions based on characters including Scooby-Doo and Tom and Jerry. The National (Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates) (2/7) 

Work underway on Camp Snoopy expansion at Carowinds in the Carolinas
Five new child-friendly rides are coming to Carowinds as part of an expansion to the Camp Snoopy section of the park on the border between North Carolina and South Carolina. The new rides are the "Peanuts Trailblazers" vehicle experience, "Kite-Eating Tree" flying ride, the "Pig Pen's Mud Buggies" all-terrain-vehicle ride, the "Woodstock Whirlybirds" spinning ride and the "Camp Bus" ride. The Herald (Rock Hill, S.C.) June 13 opening set for first hotel at Hong Kong's Ocean Park
Ocean Park in Hong Kong is scheduled to see its first hotel, the 471-room Ocean Park Marriott Hotel, open June 13. Matthias Li, the theme park's CEO, said the hotel is expected to boost the park's attendance and revenue by double digits. South China Morning Post (Hong Kong) (2/7) 

Brazilian parks receive temporary exemptions on import taxes
Brazil's Camara de Comercio Exterior approved a temporary reprieve of import tax responsibilities on new equipment for the country's theme and water parks. The exemptions zeroed out tax responsibilities on the equipment between 14% and 20%. The amount of time the exemptions will be in place varies by the type of products imported. A group representing the Brazilian theme park industry says the tax exemptions will help the parks generate jobs and make improvements to their properties. Globo (Brazil) (Portuguese-language content) (2/6)

Water Parks

New water park to open in Santa Barbara, Brazil, in April 
River Park Thermas e Resort, a new 100-hectare water park, will open in Santa Barbara, Brazil, in April 2018. Attractions at the park include a 3,100-square-meter wave pool, a lazy river and slides. Construction on the park began in 2016, and the park is expected to generate 120 direct jobs and more than 500 indirect employment opportunities. The second phase of the project will include a hotel and themed shopping complex. Diario do Comercio (Brazil) (Portuguese-language content) (2/3) 

Local officials OK plans for Ford Woods Aquatic Center in Michigan
Plans for the new Ford Woods Aquatic Center in Dearborn, Michigan, have gained the city council's approval, and construction is expected to begin within a few months. The facility will feature water slides, lap lanes and a zero-depth-entry pool. Press & Guide (Southgate, Mich.) (2/2)

Fun Climb attraction debuts at Go Kids Go in Leicester, England
The Go Kids Go indoor play center in Leicester, England, has opened Fun Climb, a collection of 30 climbing walls suitable for children and adults. The walls each have unique themes and challenges, including a glow-in-the-dark UV-light chimney, a spiral climb and a 4-D virtual reality experience. Leicester Mercury (England) (2/3) 

Bedworth, England, gets a Red Kangaroo Trampoline Park
Red Kangaroo Trampoline Park has opened in Bedworth, England, becoming the first facility of its kind in the area. It features wall-to-wall trampolines, dodgeball courts, foam pits, a tumble track, ninja obstacle courses and a wipeout game. Coventry Telegraph (U.K.) (2/3) 

Inflata Nation park taking shape in Runcorn, England
The former Jump Nation trampoline park in Runcorn, England, has closed and will reopen soon as an Inflata Nation theme park. Attractions at the new Cheshire Inflata Nation include the first giant dual-lane drop slide in the UK, a five-person inflatable slide, a giant air pillow, a Gladiator Duel, a toddler play area and a two-lane assault course. Runcorn & Widnes World (U.K.) (2/2)

New Mote Science Aquarium coming to Sarasota, Florida
Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, Florida, unveiled plans to move to a new aquarium facility in Nathan Benderson Park. The proposed Mote Science Aquarium is set to open by late 2021 and will cover 110,000 square feet, featuring education-centered activities and exhibits. Sarasota Herald-Tribune (Fla.) (2/8) 

Orlando Science Center in Florida brings back "Mindbender Mansion"
The "Mindbender Mansion," which opened in summer 2016 at the Orlando Science Center in Florida, is making a comeback and will be open through May 13. The exhibit features more than 40 interactive challenges. Orlando Sentinel (Fla.) (tiered subscription model) (2/2)

Cedar Fair, Bowling Green State University team up on college campus in Ohio
Cedar Fair Entertainment and Bowling Green State University have entered into a partnership for the construction of a college campus in Sandusky, Ohio, that includes a 15,000-square-foot educational facility and residential units for students. The proposed college would feature academics centered on the tourism industry with the potential to direct graduates toward jobs at Cedar Point and other Cedar Fair properties. The project is expected to cost between $15 million and $25 million and could be completed by 2020. Sandusky Register (Ohio) (2/8) 

Mariner of the Seas to install new attractions in $90M revamp
Royal Caribbean announced a $90 million renovation on its Mariner of the Seas cruise ship that will add several new attractions, including water slides "Cyclone" and "Typhoon," and a FlowRider surfing pool. The revamp will also include adding a "Sky Pad" virtual reality bungee trampoline experience, a glow-in-the-dark laser tag arena and "Puzzle Break: The Observatorium," an escape room attraction. The upgraded Mariner of the Seas will resume its cruises June 25. USA Today (2/2) 

Puxton High Ropes Course opening in March near Bristol, England
The Puxton High Ropes Course at Puxton Park in England is scheduled to open March 24. The £300,000 facility will feature various obstacles imported from the US and put patrons more than 20 feet above the ground. The Bristol Post (U.K.) (2/4)
