Walt Disney Co. posts 21% increase in Q1 parks operating profit
Strong results at domestic and international parks helped boost first-quarter revenue at Walt Disney Co.'s theme parks and resorts division to $5.2 billion. Operating profit during the period rose 21% to $1.35 billion on a 6% attendance jump at domestic theme parks, aided by the new Pandora: The World of Avatar at Disney's Animal Kingdom in Florida. Mexico's Grupo Xcaret to add and expand parks in Playa del Carmen
Mexico's Grupo Xcaret will spend 705 million pesos in 2018 to build the new park Xavage in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, and expand the nearby Xplor park complex. Xavage will feature high-adrenaline rides and attractions and is expected to open in late 2018 or early 2019. A high-altitude slide tower will open at the Xplor park in September. "Great Lego Race" to debut March 23 at Legoland Florida
Legoland Florida in Winter Haven announced that its new "Great Lego Race" virtual reality roller coaster will open March 23. Grupo Rio Quente to build water park in Mata de Sao Joao, Brazil
Spokespeople for Brazilian hotelier Grupo Rio Quente say they will build a major, R$500 million water park at the Costa do Sauipe hotel complex in Mata de Sao Joao. The hotelier bought the complex in late 2017 and will add a water park that will surpass the size of the 55,000-square-foot Hot Park, the signature of Rio Quente, located in Goias. Plans unveiled for Aquapark Zelina in Croatia
A €6 million water park called Aquapark Zelina is set to rise in Sveti Ivan Zelina, Croatia. Designed by Spanish firm ActionPark WaterScapes, Aquapark Zelina will feature seven water slides plus a mega water slide and other water attractions. A final application permit is still being sought, and there is no official opening date. Croatia Week (2/1)

Epic Adventures complex in Georgia to break ground soon
Work is expected to begin soon on the first phase of the 480-acre Epic Adventures sports entertainment complex in Kingsland, Georgia. Phase one will feature a 219-space RV park, and will be followed by a water park, 10 sports fields, a mini-golf course, an accessible stadium and other amenities set to be built over the next five years. The Brunswick News (Ga.) Bowling alley in Bishop's Stortford, England, to be revived
Owners of a nightclub in Bishop's Stortford, England, plan to reopen a bowling alley and invest about £1 million into upgrades. The facility is set to open in July with its existing 12 bowling lanes, a virtual reality golf range, a food court and a sports bar. Local World (U.K.)/Hertfordshire Mercury (1/31) 

CircusTrix acquires fellow trampoline operator Sky Zone
Indoor trampoline park operator CircusTrix announced its acquisition of competitor Sky Zone and plans to retain the company's leadership team. The purchase boosts CircusTrix's portfolio to 287 facilities around the world. Deseret News (Salt Lake City) (2/1)

Mexican authorities to resume talks to eliminate dolphin attractions
The president of an animal activist group based in Mexico says lawmakers in the country will resume talks that could ultimately lead to the closure of dolphin attractions. Senators did not resolve the issue in the previous session, and many have received lobbying calls from animal rights advocates. Bills affecting animal attractions were recently proposed in France and the United States. International Porsche collection coming to car museum in California
The Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, California, is celebrating the 70th anniversary of Porsche's first commercial sports car with "The Porsche Effect" event, featuring 48 iconic cars. Sea turtle exhibit at South Carolina Aquarium to receive upgrade
A "respond gallery" is set to open at the South Carolina Aquarium in Charleston with the help of a $300,000 donation from a local manufacturing firm. The expansion will feature art, digital attractions and a display of plastic items gathered from sea turtles, a warning against the threat posed by plastics to the environment. WCSC-TV (Charleston, S.C.) Corporate business surges in Orlando, Florida, with debut of new attractions
Orlando, Florida, has begun to see an increase in corporate events thanks to the openings of several attractions, such as Topgolf and Andretti Indoor Karting, that offer space for corporate groups that come to Orlando for conventions. I-Drive 360 also continues to draw group business with spaces including its Sky Lounge, atrium and outdoor courtyard, plus major attractions such as Madame Tussauds, Sea Life aquarium and the Coca-Cola Orlando Eye. Orlando Sentinel (Fla.) Purchase, New York, to get a treetop adventure course
Work is progressing on the Boundless Adventures treetop adventure park, set to hold a soft opening March 31 in Purchase, New York. The facility will feature more than a dozen obstacle elements in nine treetop courses spread across 12 acres. Courses are categorized according to intensity and vary in elevation from 10 feet to up to 40 feet above the ground. USA Today (2/1)
