Katelyn McClellanWith the knowledge that both sunscreen sales and skin cancer diagnoses were on the rise, Kristen McClellan came up with a high-tech solution she calls SnappyScreen.

The touchless sunscreen application system works like a spray tanning machine: You step in, choose an SPF (formulations with SPF 15, 30 and 40 are available in the machines) and make a height selection; the simple, effective system disperses a fine mist that covers you with sunscreen. Unlike the DIY method, SnappyScreen makes sure sunscreen is evenly applied from head to toe.

The business launched in 2009. Initially, SnappyScreen was available at hotels and beach resorts.

When Katelyn McClellan, Kristen’s sister, joined the business as chief operating officer in 2013, she took over operations, sales and business partnerships and quickly realized that water parks were the perfect venue for the sunscreen application technology.

“Hearing many customer testimonials about the ease of use, full body coverage and the ability to make sunscreen application fun is the most rewarding part of the job,” says McClellan.

Since joining the business, McClellan – who has an MBA from the NYU Stern School of Business and worked as a human capital consultant focusing on mergers and acquisitions before joining the startup – has expand the business, rolling out devices across the US and Caribbean.

“The most exciting aspect of SnappyScreen is being part of creating a new product that has never existed on the market,” she says.

SnappyScreen joined IAAPA in 2015 and showcased their product at the IAAPA Attractions Expo in Orlando last fall. So far, she says, membership has been beneficial and she looks forward to getting more involved and partnering with other IAAPA members to bring SnappyScreen to their attractions.

“The organization has proved to be very helpful in introducing us to leaders in the industry,” says McClellan. “At the IAAPA Attractions Expo in Orlando, we had the opportunity to meet many prominent amusement park operators and also other vendors that have worked in amusements for 20-plus years.”

Although McClellan is new to the amusement industry, her long-term goal is to ensure both employees and guests will benefit from SnappyScreen technology to enjoy water parks without feeling the burn.
